[What is the Green Belt Movement?] This reforestation initiative was started in 1977 by Wangari Maathai, a Kenyan woman who was the first recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in the environmental field, as a non-governmental organization (NGO). This movement started with planting just seven trees, but has now planted approximately 51 million trees across the African continent, including Kenya. A total of 100,000 people, mainly women suffering from poverty, have participated in the reforestation.
